Getting Creative with Vinyl Film: Does Your Company Name Make the Cut?

Would you consider lettering your company vehicle with a garden hose, traffic cone or doormat? Of course not. Yet polyvinylchloride, or pvc, the same plastic that’s used to manufacture garden hoses, traffic cones and doormats is also used to fabricate rolls of thin vinyl film for lettering an endless variety of surfaces.

This vinyl film, which comes in thicknesses of 2, 2.5, 3 and 4 mil, was first offered by 3M and Avery Dennison Marking in 1953. Not until the 1970’s was vinyl film offered to sign shops to be used in place of, or in combination with paint in the fabrication of signs and vehicle lettering.

Many sign companies have gone on to combine vinyl film with good quality software packages, computer equipment and laser cutters in fabricating a striking array of graphics and lettering in all shapes, colors and sizes.  In addition to rainbow of colors, vinyl film is also available in brushed chrome, brushed steels, carbon fiber, matte, gloss, alligator, holographic, camouflage, glass etch, metallic, one-way vision, Flourescent, wood grain, glass decor, engine turned gold, mosaic and metal flake to name a few.

But WAIT! There’s MORE! If you prefer painted letters but want a consistant appearance, then consider the use of paint mask vinyl film. Perhaps you’re looking for a sandblasted sign.  There’s a sandmask vinyl for such applications.

If you would like to create a striking custom t-shirt, sweatshirt or other article of clothing then check out the thermal, or heat-press transfer film.   And, for the “presenter’ in you check out the chalk board or dry erase vinyl. Perfect for customizing your own presentation materials.

Once cut to specification, the vinyl films pressure sensitive backing allows for easy application to virtually any surface. In fact, one of the advantages of computer cut vinyl is the minimal installation time which can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the size and complexity of the job, as apposed to a day to several days application time if hand painted.

Another attractive aspect of vinyl film is the ability to easily remove the vinyl lettering without having to repaint the surface. Surfaces that were not covered in vinyl and faded in the sun can possibly be buffed out to match the area that had been protected by the vinyl application.

The outdoor durability of a vinyl film application is up to seven years (and more in some cases) depending on the grade of vinyl used. High performance and long lasting grade of vinyl film is the 2-3 mil thickness, with the 4 mil being the grade of vinyl to use for short term, low cost signage.

Whatever the dimension, surface or cost, a good quality computer cut vinyl film application is not only easy, durable and cost effective, it is also accurate and consistent every time.
